Wolverhampton Wanderers Women secured their place in the second round of the Adobe Womens FA Cup with a hard fought 2-1 victory over Rugby Borough Women at the SEAH Stadium. Despite a late surge from the visitors, Wolves held firm to advance in the competition.

Match Overview

The game began with both teams showing their attacking intent. Wolves broke the deadlock in the 40th minute when Amy Simms capitalised on a defensive error to slot the ball past Rugby Borough’s goalkeeper Nyla Peterkin in the 40th minute. The hosts nearly doubled their lead just before half time, but a header from Georgia Marshall rattled the crossbar, leaving the score line unchanged before the break.

Early in the second half, Wolves extended their advantage. In the 53rd minute, a well delivered corner from Beth Merrick found Marshall at the back post, who bundled the ball home through a crowded six-yard box. The goal provided the cushion that Wolves needed as they looked to control the game.

Rugby Borough, however undeterred by the deficit, mounted a late challenge. In the 84th minute, Jess Camwell pulled a goal back for the visitors which set up a tense finish. However, Wolves defence held firm and they managed to see out the remainder of the match to secure the victory and advance to the next round of the cup.

Managers Perspective

After the match, Wolves manager Dan McNamara expressed pride in his team’s performance saying “I’m really pleased with the team’s performance” in the post match interview, while also mentioning that “before they scored, we should of made it three and the game should be done” highlighting the team’s ambition to continue developing and striving for excellence. McNamara also acknowledged the challenges ahead, mentioning upcoming tough fixtures that will test the teams resilience and focus.

With this win, Wolves Women progress to the second round of the FA Cup. They will now await the draw on Monday night to see who they will face next in their quest for further success in the competition. The team’s performance on Sunday demonstrated their potential, and with continued hard work and determination, they will look to build on this success in the upcoming rounds.
